The League of Below Average Prime Ministers Endorses Green Shift

Kinda:

The report calls for a $30-a-tonne price tag on emissions, and says a "staggering" investment in green technologies is required.

The document has been signed by four former prime ministers, Joe Clark and Kim Campbell, both Progressive Conservatives, and Liberals Paul Martin and John Turner.

[...]

The report stops short of endorsing the Liberals' Green Shift carbon plan, which would offset a tax on emissions with income tax cuts, but Roy said funds generated by an emissions tax must be redistributed to those who would be hit the hardest.

  • Wow... with that kind of star power. Two bitter ex-PMs, one senile, and one just sad.

  • Four Prime Ministers with a total of 3 years and 4 months in power - when the get together they regale about Paul Martin's longevity in office.

  • Paul: "Let me be perfectly clear, I was not a great Prime Minister but at least I got a budget or two passed." *cough*Joe*cough*

Joe: "Ho, ho, ho. Good one. But remember, I did beat Pierre Trudeau. John here didn't even win an election."

John: "Hey at least I won more than 2 seats."

Kim: "Yeah, but I only lost one election - you were 0 for 2!"

    (chaos and fist fight ensures)

  • I think "the league of below average Prime Minister" would make for a great cartoon sketch show on 22 minutes or Rick Mercer.

  • But they're correct. It needs to be done. Do you like paying $1.50 at the pump? You're love paying $2.00!

  • The funny thing is that the only attribute that doesn't apply to them all (possibly) is senile, as Kim is rather young for that. But bitter and sad apply universally, and senile is arguable for the other 3.

This is definitely the last group who you'd want to endorse anything related to you.

  • S.Harper's recent tax cut to jet fuel is particularly insidious. CO2 emissions from planes have 2-4x the warming effect as ground emissions do.
In terms of the atmospheric ledger, you could cut taxes to the AB oil patch by about 3x as much as the "savings" of the jet fuel tax cut and come out even, environmentally.
This Harper guy is no economist.

  • One doesn't know whether to laugh or treat it seriously as the kiss of death for the green shaft. What a collection of losers.
