"If I have tried to bring anything to federal politics, it is the idea that hope and optimism should be at their heart"
He will be taking a leave of absence as party leader to focus on getting health, and has recommended that Nycole Turmel take over as interim leader.

Hope he'll pull through.

Watching Jack today, it's hard to imagine him coming back to lead the NDP, even if he beats them. No one wants to speculate but there's really no one out there besides Mulcair who would step up, is there?

Dunno. I always liked Charlie Angus.
It's hard nowadays . . . the way the media works, you never really hear about anyone much except the leaders.
I hope he gets better.

Nycole Turmel as interim leader?! A former union boss who endorsed separatists? Geez.

Good post and good quote.
As I blogged myself, even this conservative appreciates the stark contrast between Jack Layton's dogged determination to use peaceful and democratic means to press for change - and certain other cowardly terrorists who resort quickly to violence to make their point.
Best wishes to Jack and his family through this trial.

CG I commend you for rising above petty partisanship and keeping it honest and real, unlike some of your Ontario counterparts who are trying desperately not to show that they see this as a potential lifeline in the coming provincial election.

i hope Layton recovers, but if he doesn't come back to federal politics, it might be an opportunity for the liberals and ndp to seriously consider merging in order to defeat the conservatives in the next election.
with the liberals rudderless and the ndp without layton, i don't see either party making any sort of electoral breakthrough against the conservative juggernaut.

Is it too soon to joke that Jack could have asked fellow 'Dipper Bob Rae to lead on an interim basis?
Jack will beat this thing!

The following is an unkind statement, nonetheless
As I was watching Mr. Layton announce this new demon in his body, I couldn't help but think that the people in the PMOs office are walking around with big smiles on their faces. Two down, 1 more to go. How sad for the Canadian people; How sad for Mr. Layton and his family. S. McCabe Nova Scotia
