What he meant to say is " I don't meet with celebrities who may offend the base." (I guess Katy Perry made the cut because she comes from an evangelical background).

Someone (a Yankee, actually) told me this joke:
"How is Steven Harper like Nickelback?
Because they are both popular without anybody you know liking them."

a. Katy was for Rachel and Chad was for Ben. They're for his kids. Martin's kids are all millionaires working for given their Canada Steamship Lines ownership. Martin became President of CSL several short years out of law school after Martin Sr. hooked him up with Power Corp. Dads do what they can with the tools at hand.
b. Taylor Swift ought to be an automatic exception to the rule that passes without comment.

Help me out who are these people?

Steve - it may be a good thing you don't know these people.
From top to bottom - Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and (I believe) Chad Kroeger from Nickelback.
I don't have a problem with Harper meeting celebs, but at the very least Martin's meetings with Bono were usually issue-based (funding for Africa - not that PMPM did anything to help the cause).

I don't recall Katy Perry or Nickelback setting policy for the Government of Canada.
I think you're confused by the term "meeting", as in "taking advice from" rather than "making the acquaintance of".

There's a pattern here:
If a celebrity is just being a celebrity, Harper will meet with them (especially if they're someone his kids are are fan of).
If a celebrity thinks that being a celebrity makes them extra-qualified to spout off on real issues, then Harper won't meet with them.
Good for him.
