Democracy In Action

They can't agree on how to fix the economy. Or how to reform our political system. Or even what to do with the frickin' long form Census.

So what's the one thing our elected members of parliament can all agree on?

Nobody messes with Bonhomme Carnival:

OTTAWA – MPs took the unprecedented step Wednesday night of unanimously denouncing articles published by the country’s national news magazine, Maclean’s.

Maclean’s had published a controversial cover story pronouncing Quebec the “most corrupt province in Canada.” The accompanying article traced a series of scandals in that province from the Duplessis era in the 1950s through to the Liberal sponsorship scandal and the present-day Bastarache Commission hearings into allegations that politicians improperly influenced the appointment of judges.

But the suggestion that all of Quebec was the “most corrupt province” was too much, apparently, for MPs from all parties, who unanimously supported the motion from Bloc Quebecois MP Pierre Paquette “that this House, while recognizing the importance of vigorous debate on subjects of public interest, expresses its profound sadness at the prejudice displayed and the stereotypes employed by Maclean’s Magazine to denigrate the Quebec nation, its history and its institutions.”

  • Aren't these the same people that remain indifferent to Quebec's presence as part of this great nation?

  • It's funny how the Quebec politicans are trying to turn this article into an attack on Quebecers. It isn't. It's an attack on corrupt politicians in Quebec. And there's been a lot of evidence of corrupt politics in Quebec lately.

  • They should do something about the problem rather than doing something about the reporting of the problem.

    If they're going to waste time condemning MacLean's magazine, they should have done it for the infamous "why do men do it" cover from July 2000. Linky-Poo

    I wish I had a picture of the cover, because that's the best example.

    The article basically says that all men are violent murderers, genetically. I love the opening quote:

    If there is a gene for murder, it is a safe bet it will be found first in someone who carries XY chromosomes. That is, a man.

    I also like the part where they say the decrease in murders is due to the decrease in men aged 15 to 29. Or the part where they explain women kill out of self-defense, whereas men kill out of jealousy.

    Men "hunt down and kill their partners," as Boyd says, often massacring their entire families. Women do neither. Men rape before killing;

    killing, and in particular killing with extreme or wanton violence, is overwhelmingly a guy thing

    Well I'm a man and I can say that I've never once had the slightest urge to rape before killing, massacre an entire family, or hunt down a partner. Not even when I play Grand Theft Auto. Maybe I should go see a doctor, because according to Maclean's, I should have those biological urges.

  • Don't confuse a motion being passed unopposed with all MPs agreeing: in this instance, one MP (independent) objected to the motion, then left the chamber. The motion was re-introduced with fewer MPs in the House, and that time nobody objected.

  • Well, you can be sure of one thing when it comes to politicians. They love to agree to disagree with each other.
