Dodging a Bullet

The happiest man about all this is likely Stephen Harper, since the Tories can keep churning out the fundraising letters on this topic.

Gun registry survives: MPs vote to kill Tory bill to scrap the program (Gun-Registry-Vote)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OTTAWA: The gun registry has survived a critical vote - but just barely.

MPs voted 153-151 today to kill a Conservative bill to scrap the program.

The result takes the hot-button issue off the legislative table for this session, but it's a long way from dead.

The Tories are warning opposition MPs the issue will be front and centre in the next election campaign.

They plan to target MPs in rural ridings who changed their votes after saying they would support scrapping the registry.

The Liberals have promised to amend the program if they form a government, while the NDP have pledged to introduce a bill calling for changes this fall.

The Tories argue the registry criminalizes hunters and farmers and has no effect on crime.

But a wide coalition of police officers, doctors and anti-violence advocates say the program saves lives.

  • I am glad that the racist white male GUN NUTS lost today. HAHAHAHAHHA

Now we should charge anti-gun control racist white males with hate crimes and properly re-educate them about real Canadian values.

    Long live Canada :)

  • I suspect that you are right.

Seems odd that the Lib and NDP have agreed to keep a registry that even they admit is flawed.

Not only is this a fundraising issue for the Cons. but it will bw an election issue whenever the writ is dropped.

  • haha, intfan's satire of af a tin-hat moon-bat socialist is cute. If Harper were as smart as he and some of his followers think, he would have sent some of the Liberals who originally supported this bill to patronage heaven before this final vote and picked up their seats in by-elections. Unless he wanted the bill to be defeated for the above mentioned fund-raising reason. No, a politician wouldn't be that cynical.

  • Today, Canada kicked the NRA's butts :)

I am going to burn the flag of hate (the American flag) as I report Canadians who post online racist messages on BloggingTories to the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

    What a glorious, beautiful day!

  • I also predict that every single KKKonservative MP in Calgary who voted against gun control today will get their butts kicked in the next election.

Bookmark my post--you heard it here first: a clean sweep of Calgary with a full slate of LIBERAL MPs :)

  • Congrats Liberals,
to kill a Private Members Bill,
    by a 2 vote margin,
8 rural Lib Mps had to be whipped,
    and 12 NDP MPs bullied.

    Enjoy your moment.

  • I am a proud liberal supporter :)

I predict that the racist KKKonservatives are going to lose 100 seats in the next election!

  • When Ignatieff wins a 250 seat majority, he should pass a law to confiscate all the guns. I will be so overjoyed when that happens.

The next election results will see the progressive boot stomping on the KKKonservatives faces, forever and ever!

  • Intfan/Anonymous' repeated views aside, the issue's a good fundraising tool for the Tories, and a few rural Liberal and NDP MP's may face a backlash. But elections, and especially majorities, are won in the suburbs, and especially the suburbs of Toronto and Vancouver. The gun registry may not be as big an issue there as it is with rural voters, but I do wonder if the Tory stance will play well with Tory/Liberal swing voters in those ridings.

  • I have to say it sure is motivating me to make another donation to the CPC. So far they're the only party (what is the Green position?) that hasn't promised to steal my property to buy votes in Toronto.

  • Apparently on BCL's blog and in other places I have been accused of being "The Observer", and the "Intfn" sockpuppers. An IP check contrasted against them should clear that right up. Thanks.

  • Jack Layton is the big winner in all of this. While the other two leaders were whipping their boys and hurling hyperboles, Layton came out as the common sense moderate while still getting his way.

fyi .. I am no Layton fan. I just thing he played this one well.

Yup. Personally, I think anyone who believes Harper actually wanted to win this vote is a fool. About as foolish as thinking the CPC MP's were not whipped.

  • Hah, the chess master won? Yep, he's won over a lot of urban voters impressed with his anti-finesse and anti-courage in this whole hullaballo about guns. It's softened his image, that he's completely standing beside those underdog guys and gals packing heat, and showing no interest in compromise. Oh, and the rural gunslingers have to be impressed how he was able to hide behind a skirt and deny that its a gov't bill while spending big bucks (hopefully taxpayer dollars) on signs and bully efforts on the few opposition members. Rubbing their noses in the fact that some changed their votes -- that'll make them forget all the principles Harper has left at the alter/election box. Yep, he's a winner alright. The emperor, please put on some clothes.

  • Within minutes of the vote is was David M who had a fundraiser going out. Thought the vote was so conservatives could use it to fund raise.

Which specific Conservative MPs do you believe had to be whipped into opposing the gun registry, Gayle?
