Sarah Thomson's Martha Moment
In 2006, Martha Hall Findlay was the only woman in an 8 candidate field. She was a political outsider who earned high praise from the media for her performance during the campaign, despite lackluster levels of support. And when she threw her support behind Stephane Dion in Montreal, it gave Dion the momentum he would eventually need to come out of top.
Now, leadership conventions are very different beasts from municipal elections. But Thomson's endorsement of George Smitherman today, coupled with an encouraging poll, and a fiscally conservative message, may be just what the Smitherman campaign needs to turn the tide against the Rob Ford phenomenon.

Congrats to her. Unfortunately Rossi has to do the same. I say unfortunately because Rossi was running a good underdog campaign until recently. A few weeks ago things went really, really bad. He came up with the stupid underground highway idea, really bad television ads, and then Thomson believed his campaign was spreading a rumour that she was going to withdraw and endorse Rossi. Rossi was running a high road campaign that I think could have worked. Then a few weeks ago things changed, for the worse.

She ran out of money.
I think she and her supporterts were angry when it was leaked that she would endorse Rossi; So she switched.
I also do not think her support is going to induce too many more people to Smitherman than anyone else-including Ford.
Just a couple of days ago she denied that she would do this.Politics as usual....

The Dion issue bears further analysis: I believe it was Kennedy who allowed a few of his supporters to vote for Martha on the first ballot, hoping she wouldn't be an embarrassment to the Liberal Party for receiving so few votes.
That put Kennedy behind Dion on the first ballot, a position from which he never recovered.

No, a few days ago she said that she thought that the 3 candidates who were trailing should drop out to endorse the candidate who had the best chance of beating Ford.
I liked Thomson and had hoped her and Rossi would pull a John Tory and David Miller and come out on top ahead of Smitherman and Ford.
