Abstinence Only Voting

"Nothing makes people more cynical about politics than when parties don't do what they say, don't stand up for what they believe."
-Jack Layton, 2007

TODAY:

The House of Commons voted 144-117 today against a Liberal motion to bring down the minority Conservatives.

The Liberals and Bloc Quebecois supported the motion while the Tories opposed it and the NDP abstained.

  • Hey! There's that photo I love of the 3 staged Liberal Caucus research staff (all neatly pressed and preppy coiffed) ... 'demonstrating' as Layton walks into the House of Commons!

  • Our Liberal blogging colleagues are taking directions and stage managing from someone at Liberal Inc. Four prominent Lib bloggers all posted the same quote and posted it within just a very narrow window of time:

    The quote:
"Nothing makes people more cynical about politics than when parties don’t do what they say, don’t stand up for what they believe,” Layton

  • That girl behind Jack Layton is one fat Liberal staffer. Poor girl. I wouldn't force her to have her photo taken.

  • Leftdog, stop already! Everyone understands leftwingers are full of hate, but c'mon, knock it off! Don't go all anonymous and stuff!

  • Chrisitan ... I didn't blog as 'anonymous' .. I have no idea who used that handle for the post above ... not me ... If Calgary Grit has sitemeter or some such counter, he can verify not my IP #

  • The NDP of my grandmother's generation is dead. To think, all those years that she donated because they were the party that would stand up for the right things; Jack has finished the slow destruction of the Tommy Douglas values of the NDP. Sorry Khadr, you'll have to stay in prison a little while longer, Jack does not want to risk losing seats.

Depends. More cushion for the pushin' and all that.

  • Anonymous: is that so? The NDP just won the biggest political battle of the decade thanks to this minority setup, are doing a lot of the actual work to help canadian families. Is the compromise perfect? no. Could it be a better deal? probably. But the conservatives are known to be hardliners, and to think that we got this victory out of another week of conservative rule -- priceless.
