Official Game 7 Thread
Last Canadian team to win Stanley Cup: 1993 Montreal Canadiens
Liberals in power: October 1993 to January 2006
Canadian teams to win Stanley Cup during this time period: 0
With this in mind, let's hear predictions for tonight's game...

31 Comments:
The last time a Canadian team won the tory's were at the bottom of the polls, presumably in a leadership race? (my timing could be off).
Given that, shouldn't the flames of won in 2004?

See, the way I see it, the Flames almost won the cup in 2004, when the Tories almost won the 2004 election.

well CG, harper told Daniel Lessard after Game 4 that he didnt like their chances
Stephen Harper gave up on the Oilers. FOR SHAME!

Maybe people in Toronto will take that stat to heart if they want the Leafs to win the Cup.

Obviously.. its all the Liberals fault that Canadian teams didn't win Stanley...
Obviously, the Liberal party should make a big deal about the fact that Harper 'didn't like their chances' when they were down 3-1 ...
=P Still, coincidences are funny, I wonder how many Stanleys have been won by Canadian teams while under Liberal rule and under Tory rule...

I hear Harper has asked government lawyers to see if the government can sue the Liberal Party on behalf of the 1994 Vancouver Canucks.

My prediction is that the game will go to three or perhaps four overtime periods and will end on a Steve Smith style goal.
Wouldn't want to jinx anyone by picking a team.

On second thought, shouldn't Liberals favour the team wearing red ?

With respect to entirely useless information:
Since 1958 the Conservatives have been in power for 12 Stanley cups in 15 years. The Liberals have been in power for 13 Stanley Cups in 34 years. 80% of the time for Conservatives, 38% for Liberals.
And the Saskatchewan Roughriders have never won the Grey Cup under the CCF or NDP.
Coincidence?

He can't resist...
I thought the unelected Senators were taking the cup home this year Don?
But seriously, Oilers 3-1 over the 'Canes tonight.

Zac, at 5:20 PM
I'm sorry, I can't join the Oiler's bandwagon. As someone who still has nightmares of Greztky and company cheating their way past Dale Hawerchuck, Laurie Boshman and the Jets I wish only for a painful overtime defeat for the Oilers tonight.
Go Whalers!

Wow. The bitterness of some of my fellow Canadians! I *always* cheer for the last Canadian team left standing in the playoffs, even if that team comes from the armpit of my otherwise great home province--Calgary.

For what it's worth, no Canadian team won the Stanley Cup - not one single time - under the first and greatest Conservative PM, Sir John A. Macdonald.
And, don't forget, it was under the Harper Conservatives that the Canadian Olympic men's team was embarrassed.

harper refused to wear the oiler sweater, said he didnt like their chances, well that loser gave the oilers bad luck. Buuut, american teams without canadian players, mmmmmmm, would the ever win a sigle game, let alone the cup...
By
Okwajo, at 11:48 PM
hey, harper knows a winner. and the winner ain't the oilers.

Oops, I meant 3-1 'Canes over Oilers, what was I thinking?
By
Zac, at 12:20 AM
The last time Vancouver won the Stanley Cup was 1918 if I remember correctly. That was a Conservative Govt too!! This year's version didn't do the Oilers much good, I'm sorry to say.
As a Canucks fan, I always cheer for the last CDN team too, although it's a bit harder when it's the Flames in the final!!!

We need a Conservative majority for a Canadian team to win the Stanley cup.
Vote Conservative. :)

Penny, do you remember the cup disaster of '94?
I was about 10 when we lost but remember asking, "Daddy, why are we destroying our own town?"
By
Zac, at 12:41 PM
I do indeed, Zac.
I remember the poor thug who got a rubber bullet in his head and has never been the same since. He was trying to bring a hydro pole down onto the crowd, as I recall.
I remember the local drug addicts and criminals heading over to the festivities to smash windows and loot the high end Robstonstr businesses.
And I remember frightened hockey fans unable to get home for hours after the game...
It was a shameful time.
I was worried when I saw similar stuff happening in Edmonton, but perhaps they were able to learn from our horrifying experience, since things didn't seem to get quite so out of hand.
But dammit!! Is there some law that says Canadian teams can be allowed to get to Game 7 - once in a while - but never win the Cup?
By
Penny, at 3:54 PM
Penny: Leafs in 7 in '07.
