Better Than Volpe But Still...
Like him or hate him, you know a party's in trouble when this name is being seriously considered.

Unfortunately we have probably the weakest front bench and weakest cabinet in the history of the party. I've thought for a while we would have to go outside the house to find a new leader. But Bob Rae?
Sit let's just lie down on the road and all become speed bumps.

The rumours that Bob Rae is being considered as a possible Governor General are more realistic. He'd probably do a decent job of it to. But his rehabilitation in public memory has not proceded nearly far enough to make a party led by him electable in Ontario.

Did they tag Gorbachev yet?
Now that kind of reform I can buy into!

*sigh* They aren't possibly being serious about this are they? If anybody, it should be Dr. Michael Ignatieff.

*innocently* I always fancied John Raulston Saul or David Suzuki as the next Liberal leader.
C'mon. I dare ya.
By Babbling Brooks, at 4:03 p.m.
It's more likely that Suzuki will make a run for the Green Party if he ever decides to run for political office.

anyone but volpe. or rae. or that ignatieff kid. i mean, damn. remember when we thought manley was a ridiculous idea? ha.

Rae has no positive record with which to run for leadership. People that think this is realistic have no conception on how the liberal party works, and how party politics in Canada work to form governments. If your base thinks your close to their idea of policy, then something is wrong. Rae may quite possibly go for the federal NDP leadership if Layton is tossed from his seat. Maybe his wife will be elected in the next riding over, but never will both be elected.
By Concerned Albertan, at 6:41 p.m.
Politics is an interesting process. Sometimes you get to hear things, and they are intended to be heard to serve a specific purpose. Sometimes 'rumours' get started for a purpose.
Somebody's already mentioned it, but Mr Rae is also being considered for GG. The timing of this rumour as well of the nature of it certainly raises his stature. He's gone from being a public figure and a former and less than successful NDP premier, to a 'challenger'. Challengers are often bought off... but then I don't mean to start any rumours of my own, so I'll shut up now.

You know it's summer and newspapers are struggling to fill column inches when this kind of report pops up. As if.

Amazing! Three different people with exactly the same comment, all within two minutes of one another.
I think Rae would be a great Liberal leader. But then, I'm a Tory. I would regret his appointment as GG (Hell, I'd regret his appointment as dogcatcher) since it would further demean that office.

matt: you're right. He could never be elected in ontario. There are lots of people here who support everything the NDP stands for - except for the NDP itself. And if the Liberals don't have Ontario anymore, what do they have? (Newfoundland?)
Myself, I was too young to remember anything about Rae as premier except for Rae Days - which were great for me 'cause it was an extra day off school!

There must be more than one liberal in Calgary! I expect a Liberal minority, with Jack LAyton at the wheel, a suitable result for Mr. Martin, frustrated as always!
