Hockey Night in Edmonton Strathcona

Surely Canada's self-proclaimed hockey historian PM can't refuse, can he?

OTTAWA — National Hockey Day?

That's what the third Friday in February would become in Canada if a member of Parliament from Alberta has her way.

Linda Duncan has already produced one political miracle — winning the riding of Edmonton-Strathcona for the NDP in the federal election last October — and now she's taking aim at another one.

On Monday, Duncan will table a private member's bill in the House of Commons to have the third Friday officially declared National Hockey Day. She plans to announce her intentions today at Vimy Ridge Academy, an Edmonton school with a hockey team that has both boy and girl players.

  • why a friday?

In 100 years the Habs have played less than 70 games on a Friday (35 of those 70 games were at Buffalo btw)

seems to me any holiday revolving around hockey should be held on a Saturday...

  • Nice Priorities...I wonder if she got this idea talking to Edmontonians at their "kitchen tables"...

  • This strikes me as the same kind of strategy that Kevin Taft employed when he advocated for rodeo.

It's an obvious attempt to portray oneself as jus' reg'lar folks, in touch with other jus' reg'lar folk. It makes it harder for other parties to "demonize" or portray someone as "other". It's pretty transparent, though.

  • Oh, this is just begging for a search of Lib and Con private member's bills (but I just washed my hair). I am sure there is no craziness there. ;)

  • Well, there was one Liberal who used his private members bill to advocate for a Pierre Trudeau holiday, I believe - so I don't think this is any more zany than that.

  • This isn't a proposal for a statutory holiday, so... who cares, really?

If passed, it will join the ranks of Left-Handed West Coast Immigrant Bagpipe Technician Day and whatnot.
