Broken Toews
While some will cry about patronage, anything that gets Vic Toews out of Ottawa can't be that bad, so I don't have a huge problem with this. What it does mean is that, after nine months of non-stop election speculation, the media will soon move on to their second favourite topic - cabinet shuffle speculation!

Vic Toews is a very respectable MP that shoots straight and backs up his words with actions.
I dont see any of his calibre on the Liberal side of the house.
It will be Canada's loss if he leaves but Manitoba's benefit to have one less Liberal judge letting the little car thieves go free.
Your criticism is misplaced.

ya those 10 year old car theives, they need to be in jail...
but srsly Dan, Cabinet Shuffle Speculation isnt number 2...
1) election speculation
2) liberal leadership speculation
3) sex scandals involving bikers
4) regular sex scandals
5) Cabinet Shuffle speculation
it used to occupy a higher rank but, when Harper IS the entire Cabinet, it falls in the rankings...

I also note that the RCMP finding no wrongdoing over Cadman was not the front page of either the star or Globe, and has been shuffled off their webpage to some netherworld.

Wouldn't a federal judge have to have an absolutely "clean" record? Didn't Toews have charges on funding issues?

Interesting point re the "clean record." But Toews was Manitoba's AG and litigated some important cases before the SCC. He's qualified.

The problem being, those 10 year old thieves are now 16-17 and are now using stolen cars to ram police cars (twice in four months now), run over joggers (nearly killed the poor guy), and drive in robberies.
It was the failure to properly deal with them under the vaunted YOA that has lead to the much more serious problem we now face.
And to think that now the biggest disaster ever named to the SCC R. Abella has penned a majority ruling making it all but impossible to treat them as adults.
A lingering effect of Paul Martin as PM...

The optics doesn't look good. There is the conflict of interest since Toews recommended people for the committee which is making the decision and there is his prior conviction. Also the National Post is suggesting he is being considered because he will be an embarassment once news gets out about his new baby and messy divorce.

I believe that politicians have a right to privacy about there sexual lives. It’s none of the publics business. Bill Clinton's affair was a matter for Bill, Hillary and Monica Lewinsky and nobody more. Vic Toews however has wrapped himself in the cloth of Mr. Family Values and his very personal vendetta against same-sex marriage makes him quite the hypocrite being caught with his pants down. Hypocrisy should have no place in the commons or on the bench. Toews is through.

Bill Graham carried on a homosexual, adulterous affair with a minor named Lawrence Metherel.
Nobody used that against him you puke.
And being against gay marriage his so completely besides the point that only a Liberal would consider that a useful talking point.
Turn over and let Ralphie three budgets to rub some slime on your back.

In response to the previous poster, I think it is very much relevant. Vic Toews spoke at length about the sanctity of marriage, yet he was screwing around on his darling wife and impregnating a much younger woman. His opposition to gay marriage on the grounds of the sanctity of marriage is laughable based on his own behaviour. His hypocrisy doesn't end with his extra marital sexual conquests. He has long attacked the Liberals for filling benches with Liberal partisans who have passed the judicial screening committee. Irwin Cotler's former chief of staff is an example. Now, Toews has put his own name in front of a committee which he appointed. The man is a first degree hypocrite and a national disgrace.

I was interested to learn that this (possible) situation isn't exactly unprecedented.
For the record, notwithstanding that the Libs did exactly the same thing, appointing Toews would be a mistake, IMO - not b/c of his private life, or even the trouble he got into with Elections Canada. I just have a problem with any government appointing a sitting Minister of Justice to the Bench.

The affair Bill Graham is alleged to have had, would have happened 28 years ago, many years before becoming an MP, let alone cabinet minister.
