I hope a few youth do toss their hat into the ring. The fee to enter might be too much for it to happen, but I think some young voices that are running not to win, but to push some issues and be a difference maker on later ballots in a delegated convention would be a great thing for the party.
The Martin team really trained a lot of liberals in the age range of 20-30 right now as to how best run a leadership campaign, so as a party we have a huge respurce of young people that know the in's and out's of membership rules, how to run fake clubs, take over riding associations etc, etc etc.
Why not put some of these skills to use and mess around with senior party and get some foward looking policy some attention on the national stage.
God knows our party needs some fresh faces. When a 60 year old academic with 30 years between him and the country is your "new face" a Richard Diamond, Ruby Dhalla, this Matt guy would be welcome.

Bart,
On the topic of "really wild speculation" I glad at least one westerner, no matter how wild the possibilty is has a few supporters.
Considering the fact that the last time the Liberal Leadership had a Western Canadian on the ballot was the corrination of Louis St. Laurent in 1948, I don't think I'm alone when I look at all the rumored candidates and it seems quite plausible that we could have a field of 10 or more and not a single person from west of the golden horseshow. With maybe 5 or 6 Toronto area candidates, and no one from Western Canada, I don't see how our party ever hopes to win more than a few token seats in the fastest growing region in the country.
I really hope that a Ralph Goodale, Lloyd Axworthy, Ujjal Dosanjh, Anne Mclelan, David Karawici, Hedy Fry, Reg Alcock anybody! from Western Canada will at least try to make sure that Western Liberals have someone saying that we have a lot of Liberals in this part of the country and have a few idea's of our own.

Manitoba Liberal: The much esteemed and beloved Rev. Lloyd Henderson of Portage La Prairie ran against both Pearson and Trudeau for the leadership. Against Pearson our Lloyd got a single vote. Against Trudeau? Not so many.
