I just can't understand what Harper was thinking when he selected Fortier and Emerson.
Emerson's probably a good man to have on the softwood case - but he should have gone Indie and not Conservative.

unbelievable. where was old Bernie when stronach and k.martin made their moves? apparently this guys sees and hears nothing until someone puts it in front of his face. must be nice living under that rock..

Shapiro is a Liberal hack.
This little tactic will backfire on the Liberals. The double standard here is obvious to anyone. (Except the Jason Cherniaks of the blogosphere, of course)
By Michael Fox, at 6:49 p.m.
Did Shapiro investigate the Belinda crossing?
I vaguely recall him being asked to but couldn't remember if he did and simply cleared everyone or he didn't think it was worth his time.
It does seem odd that he would investigate this one and not Belinda's - the circumstances are almost identical from an ethics perspective.
By calgarygrit, at 7:01 p.m.
This is a disgrace. He has been such a disappointment as EC.
By eastern capitalist, at 7:19 p.m.
Shapiro is disgraced, but does not know it yet. He should be thrown out.
But---Get an ethics commish who reports to Parliament, and give him subpoena power
By David M. McClory, at 7:43 p.m.
Shapiro did not investigate Belinda's crossing. This is pure bs that he has chosen to investigate Emerson's.
By Andrew, at 8:18 p.m.
Geez, this sounds like the CalgaryTory blog... We can all agree that Belinda's deal reeked, but I recall some surface level investigation (whether it was the media alone, I'm not certain but someone out there can verify) where it was made clear that David Peterson approached Belinda and the PM... It still reeks, by the way.
Now, the Harper-Emerson deal seems as blatant as that, if not more an affront to the democratic voice of one riding. You have both parties in public essentially saying Emerson's loyalty was bought for the price of a cabinet post. They've said it on TV. Shapiro, Chretien hack or not, does have some authority here and his opinion on the Grewal/Dosanjh issue clearly stated that if there was an offer to procure their vote/seat, it would be in breach of the house's ethics. Remember, Harpo refused, er avoided offering his testimony to Shapiro on this ruling.
That aside, here are the Tories, who campaigned on ethics and cleaning up gov't (and image of politicians), caught 'blue-handed' yet pretending that the Liberal way is the high ground. Astounding in its cynicism. Repellent if done by Liberals, just revenge if done by Tories? What kind of logic is that?
By Anonymous, at 9:39 p.m.
If I were Mr Shapiro, I would keep my mouth shut.
The first piece of legislation from the conservatives will be to appoint a new TRUELY independent ethics commissioner.
Can you guess who will be the first person investigated.
Mr. Shapiro your actions regarding the cover-up of LIBERAL corruption, is about to make some headlines.
You had best start shredding, before the RCMP sieze your office,
Mr. Shapiro you are the one who is about to be investigated, watch your back I suspect criminal charges are following you pretty closely.
