Top of the Class

T0m Olsen wrote up his MLA report cards in today's Herald. With all the hijinx in Ottawa I haven't been following the legislature as closely as usual this session, so I won't critique his rankings that closely, except to say I think he was a little hard on the the three Calgary Liberal MLAs. If anyone who has been paying close attention to the happenings in Edmonton wants to comment on his rankings (I'm looking at you Daveberta), go right ahead and do so.

So, here are the highlights from Tom Olsen's MLA rankings:

The Leaders
Ralph Klein: C-
Kevin Taft: A-
Brian Mason: A

Alberta Alliance Caucus
Paul Hinman: B

Leadership Contenders
Ted Morton: B
Lyle Oberg: C-
Dave Hancock: C-
Ed Stelmach: B-
Gary Mar: C

The Three Amigos
Dave Taylor: B-
Harry Chase: C
David Swann: D

Other Notables
Harvey Cenaiko: A-
Ron Stevens: B+
Iris Evans: B
Shirley McClellan: D
Hung Pham: D-

  • can't speak for Edmonton
but whoa... does look like there are some serious leanings reflected in that report card

from my knowledge David Swann is extremely popular and appreciated by his supportive (those who voted him in) constituents, for one

this may be an indicator of who was asking and being asked, in the process of composing the report card

  • Ha! Tom Olsen is such a Tory hack. Did you know his bro used to work in Klein's office? Alberta politics are so inbred. :P

First- How does someone not show up half the time and still get a C-? Crazy.

I would keep Kevin Taft at A-, but switch Brian Mason down to B (He hasn't been terribly effective in the past 7 months). Klein would get an F (a D+ at the highest).

Hinman hasn't been completely invisible, so B- in my books.

In the Leadership contenders category I'd switch it up:
    Dave Hancock: B+
Ed Stelmach (aka Ed who?): B
    Gary Mar: C
    Lyle Oberg: C-
Ted Morton: C- (what has he done in the past 7 months?????)

Three Amigos (and yes, I'm biased)
    Dave Taylor: B+
    Harry Chase: B+
    David Swann: B+
(First of all, ANY LIBERAL gets an automatic B just for being elected in Calgary. I gave them all B+'s mainly because they're all rookies and still have potential)

    Other "Notables"
Harvey Cenaiko: A- (yes, Tom and I agree on this one :P )
    Ron Stevens: B-
    Iris Evans: B-
    Shirley McClellan: D-
Hung Pham: F (most scandal involved MLA of the year)

    So, there. Any thoughts?

  • hey matt,

I was evaluating how they've done in the past election. I don't have any kind of methodology (though I suppose Mr. Olsen didn't either, besides our biases of course).

  • sorry, "since the last election"

  • I'll just comment on a few of the leadership contenders.

Dave Hancock: B+ (The move from Justice to Advanced Ed. was great for him. He avoids much of the SSM guff, and gets to spend some money with good cause)

Ed Stelmach: C- (Ed is my MLA, and I must say he has no shot at winning a leadership race, and would have much less of a shot at actually being a successful leader. It was truely painful having to watch this guy get out debated by the Alberta Alliance candidate. The only press he has recieved involved his having to corrected by the Premier... )

Gary Mar and Lyle O'berg: C- (I actually have a soft spot for Gary Mar, though I can't explain it. I disagree with much of what he says, but I think he is an effective politician.)

Ted Morton: D (He's done nothing in the last 7 months! This guy doesn't have much upside in a leadership race, and the party wouldn't have much upside with him as leader. They have been wise to keep a low profile on this loose cannon.

Jim Dinning: A- (Has anyone gotten more press?)

  • Is Jim Dinning listed? Is this a complete list?

  • It's a ranking of MLAs and Olsen did about 40 of them. I just picked out some of the more interesting ones and grouped them.

Since Dinning (or Mark Norris) isn't an MLA, he didn't appear on the list.

  • I can tell you Dave (et. al) I watched QP all session long, and if you think that Chase and Swann deserve a better rating than Mason and equal to Hancock... then you should look in the mirror before calling anyone else a hack.

Also, Taft got a bit of a generous rating at A-, B or B+ seemed more appropriate. But he'll come around as leader once he gets more experience.
