New Brunswick Votes

The writ drops today for the New Brunswick election, with the opposition Conservatives led by David Alward trying to oust Liberal incumbent Shawn Graham.

I must confess that my knowledge of New Brunswick politics is mostly limited to Frank McKenna and Bernard Lord leadership rumours, so I don't have many insights to share. I really like what I've seen of Shawn Graham - he's tried bold moves to turn around the province's economy and I liked the philosophy of government he espoused as a guest speaker at the 2006 Liberal Leadership Convention.

Of course, given the fiasco over the sale of New Brunswick power, and his putrid approval rating, he's certainly going to be in tough. I invite anyone more up on the election to share their comments below (Eric at 308 has a good primer).

  • I believe it is Shawn Graham, not Sean. That being said, I am fairly interested too. Graham was running one of the most classically liberal gov't in Canada but backed down on more than a few things. Just goes to show you Atlantic political parties aren't really ideologically based.

  • Thanks CJ. At the very least I spelled David's name correctly.

  • I think Shawn is going to have a pretty tough run, if you look through the CBC forums any post that mentions ditching the liberals or poking fun at Graham seems to have a greater than 90% thumbs up rate. I doubt that's an indication of how people will vote, but generally CBC comments and ratings are very liberal.

The only trouble is that the alternatives aren't looking much brighter. Seems to me the tough run is for New Brunswick.

  • As a reference, Sort the comments first to last and look at the first couple pages. . .

A joke comment from GrahamOuster stating Shawn will be transfered to Phys Ed (since he was a Phys Ed teacher) currently sits 36/5. That's a pretty rare ratio for a political comment.

  • "I've seen of Shawn Graham - he's tried bold moves..."

The boldest moves made by any Premier of New Brunswick were made by Richard Hatfield.

"I think Shawn is going to have a pretty tough run"

Maybe so. His real problems began with the attempted sale of NB Power to Hydro-Québec. This united opposition to him and caused internal issues with the Liberal Party.

Still, with that debacle fresh in voters minds, if you believe polls this is a competitive race.

  • Yes he has certainly made controversial decisions. There were also internal problems with his proposed conversion of UNBSJ into a polytechnic institute, and his new French Immersion program. On some issues he backed down, on others he made adjustments and ploughed ahead. His bold decision to privatize NB Power probably would have worked had he opened it up to other bidders instead of limiting it to Hydro Quebec. I agree with others who have noted that NBers have a choice between a bold, perhaps a little reckless, decision maker and what appears to be a more Bernard Lord-like, (don’t-rock-the-boat) style of leadership in David Alward.
