Voluntary Admission

It's been well publicized that the former two Chief Statisticians in this land were against the Census changes - one of them led the charge against change, and the other resigned in protest over it.

Not surprisingly, their successor also acknowledges the results from a voluntary long form won't be comparable to those of past surveys:

The results of the voluntary National Household Survey, which will arrive in Canadian mailboxes in spring, “will, of course, never be comparable to census data,” Wayne Smith said in an internal Statscan publication obtained by The Globe and Mail.

  • If filling out the long-form is such a no-brainer, why can't anyone on that long list persuade people to do so voluntarily?

    I believe them when they say the results of a mandatory survey would be better than the results of a voluntary one.

    What I don't understand is why they're saying that I should have my property confiscated and/or go to jail if I don't want to share information with the government.

    Those are all statisticians and governments. Those people aren't unbiased, that's a list of everyone that stands to GAIN. That's like saying we should lower taxes on hockey players and then listing all the hockey teams. After all, they're experts on hockey players, right?

    Come on.

  • @ Robert Vollman: try to think before repeating those talking points, why don't you: those cities, public health departments, & nonprofits are "only in it for themselves," are they? It's not _them_ who stand to gain, they're concerned about the welfare of their constituencies: poor people, old people, immigrants, the disabled, etc. So, no, it's not like a list of rich people complaining about taxes -- it's like a list of social workers complaining the gov't is burying & losing their files so they can't keep track of the kids in care. And you want to aid & abet them in that? But you're right: you don't understand, a whole lot of things about this issue.

  • I'm sorry if this will make their jobs harder. But my job is hard too, and I don't think anyone should go to jail or be fined to make my job easier.
