Party Like It's 1999

Of all the things to hold against Rob Ford, this is probably the least of them:

Mayoral candidate Rob Ford had a 1999 marijuana possession charge against him dropped, the Toronto Sun reports.

The newspaper says he was pulled over on vacation in Florida and was found with a joint in his back pocket on Valentine's day 11 years ago.

But this story illustrates how Toronto's mayoral election has become "All. About. Ford."

And if the vote turns into a referendum on this tea party north candidate, that certainly bodes well for Smitherman.

UPDATE: Ford has also admitted to being charged twice for assault and once for failing to provide a breathalyzer.

But let's go easy on Rob - let he who hasn't been charged four times cast the first stone...

  • But isn't there a chance that the anti-Ford votes split off into the other 4 candidates?

If Smitherman is going to win, he has to start winning votes outside of the downtown core and into Scaraborough, East York and North York.

  • My guess is that if Smitherman is seen as the only way candidate who can beat Ford, a lot of the anti-Ford vote will reluctantly creep his way.

But, so far, he's run a rather lackluster campaign.

  • Asked for comments, most other candidates laughed, but Smitherman snorted...

  • Smitherman is a self-admitted former drug addict, so anyone leaving Ford over the issue wouldn't go to Smitherman

    Brilliant. :)

  • @nuna: that sort of fact doesn't play into the media agenda, so they really haven't been giving that their attention in their stories on Ford.

  • What is this "Toronto" of which you speak and who gives a flying Fudup ?

  • Toronto rocks, it's a great city, I'm so glad I moved here - I've never seen it have a mayor it deserves and I don't see it happening this time at bat. I'm not a Rob Ford fan but if he wins, it at least means that Smitherman loses.

"Smitherman is a self-admitted former drug addict, so anyone leaving Ford over the issue wouldn't go to Smitherman".

    Oh the spinning. :D

Nobody is really bothered by the idea that Rob Ford once smoked a joint... it's this instinct he has to lie.

He's the guy that is going to clean up city hall... the guy that lies first and then asks questions later... yeah ok.

  • "But let's go easy on Rob - let he who hasn't been charged four times cast the first stone..."

Good idea. So let's hope Canada will go easy on Liberals after multiple charges for theft of taxpayers money in ADSCAM.

When will you Liberals finally pay back the $100 million you stole and is still missing?

  • So, could it be, like Democracy, David Miller is not good enough, until you consider the alternatives.
