For 157,000 per year I expect any MP to work, not to be an apprentice.
By John Williams, at 11:22 p.m.
This is a potentially big problem. The Bloc Quebecois, while destabilizing, may have also served as a safety valve on separatist sentiments. Quebec voters (or at least 40% of them) have taken a big gamble in voting en masse for a federalist party. If the NDP cannot represent Quebec ably, I see considerable risk of a backlash. This will be particularly dangerous after Charest's term expires, and the PQ takes back the "national" assembly.
By hosertohoosier, at 12:35 a.m.
I commented on this on CK's blog. The interview is not well done(unless it was a set-up, but ~I don't believe~ that is the case.
By Offroad Artist, at 12:53 a.m.
Hosertohoosier has hit the nail on the head, that is the number one threat to Canada, and Harper and Layton are guaranteed to screw it up. This time there will no need for a tricky question, the separatists will be out in full force saying "see, we told you that Ottawa does not work and is broken, and Layton agrees who is a federalist".
When Quebecers are going to see in a year or so a stark choice between Harper the Dictator, and freedom, they will vote for independence in droves because at that stage financial things will not matter.
I do not give high odds that Canada will survive a Harper mandate.

Typical whacked out far-left comment. I think the best chance for a Liberal revival is to stand aside awhile, and let these dippers have the spotlight and these sorts of interviews, and ask them, do they have anything to add to that?

Why is everyone assuming that PQ is going to win? At this rate of fickleness of the Quebec population I'm putting my money on Quebec Solidaire winning. I'd recommend buying Quebec Solidaire on intrade and make some money
By Winni, at 3:07 a.m.
Winni,
Er, Quebec Solidaire is as solidly separatist if not more so than the Parti Quebecois. Either or, really, you get the same thing - except QS will tank the economy and literally turn Quebec into Greece at the same time.

I was about to leave a comment that as a supporter of the NDP, I was also laughing at Mulcair's overweening arrogance and that I re-tweeted something about his workshop on tinfoil hat-making.
But it's quite a surprise to encounter a phalanx of ignorant, charmless, grumpy old farts here.
Your ill-informed concern for Québec is very touching ... ^NOT.
By deBeauxOs, at 9:56 a.m.
I'm inclined to accept Mulcair's explanation that the context was lost, just because I think he's too able a politician to have said something so odd.
But I wouldn't be shocked if we'll see some more slipups and misunderstandings while the NDP gets used to the glare of the spotlights. It was the same for Reform in '93. Give them a little time to get used to the ropes before you start in on the doomsday scenarios. Don't worry, they are in their trial by fire now.
By saphorr, at 11:15 a.m.
Agreed with saphorr, however to my mind this is not the first example of Mr. Mulcair appearing to have engaged his mouth before engaging his brain.
If I were a Dipper, I'd be very nervous about the fact that this guy is the leader-in-waiting.
By Anonymous, at 11:37 a.m.
It's possible that Muclair's sentiments reflect those of his constituents.

Mulcair is not le dauphin.
Peggy Nash was just elected to Parliament, remember?
