I'm with you there, Grit.

I was wondering how the results were tallied so fast. Unlike here in Calgary where we had to sit for hours waiting to find out what happened.
I prefer your system of automated counting over our manual counting. Waiting sucks!

I think everyone remembers that kid in grade 3 filling out his/her scantron card dilligently only to realize that they missed a question somewhere down the line.
Maybe that explains the landslide?

Federal elections are still the most exciting. Canada is so big and I love how long it takes to get all the ballots counted from coast to coast, much more of a nail bitter. Like when Atlantic Canada starts trickling in a little early, then Quebec and Ontario start to tally, its such a beautiful sight. Then on a a map Alberta turns blue all of a sudden.
In Ottawa here it was probably around 8:30 that they declared Jim Watson the winner. I totally agree, scan-tron voting takes away a lot of the fun, drama and excitement. It's more effective true, I'm reminded of that old saying, "just sit back and let the machine do all the work."

I filled out an automated ballot in Edmonton, and it was still ninety minutes waiting for the first result from my ward. But, yes, I far prefer both the excitement and the reliability of hand-counted ballots marked with an X.

It was especially unfortunate for the people who were still waiting in line to vote when the winner was announced...

That's what sometimes happens in western Canada during federal elections: we know who has won before our voting is done.

The Anglophile in me loves how they do the count in UK elections: they count each and every vote in a given riding at a central location, and then haul all the candidates - everyone from the Conservatives/Labour/LibDems to the Monster Raving Loonies, if they're on the ballot - onstage at that location, and then read out the results. Leads to some great visuals, if nothing else, though it delays the results for hours.
But overall, I like the e-reader system. At least the way Toronto used it, there was still a paper ballot that could be checked & counted if necessary, and we didn't have to wait for hours to get the results.
As for people finding out who won before they voted: I was one of them, as I was in a long line when the polls closed. It looked like few other people knew (I didn't see anyone checking out iPhones or blackberries, except yours truly) and most if not everyone who was in line ahead & behind me stayed to vote.
