Two legislature members from Alberta's governing Progressive Conservatives are defecting to the Wildrose Alliance, a fledgling political party gathering momentum in the province.

The NDP just got shifted down to fourth-party status. Let's hope Eddy preserves enough integrity that the Liberals aren't knocked down to third.

If enough Tories defect, can the Wild Rose party form a coalition government?

You have to figure Boutillier may join them soon...at that point, they'd need 6 more MLAs to pass the Liberals for official opposition status.

Heard the WR leader on As It Happens last night, with her dinosaur views on climate change science. Combined with the other two lead stories on that show -- all three being basically variations of right wingers dragging or trying to drag Canada backward as fast as they can -- I got thoroughly depressed about the country's prospects for 2010.

She also seems to be against diversifying Alberta's economy. She's said that research that doesn't directly benefit Alberta's oil industry--she gives the example of nanotechnology--is "silly." Big Oil has to love that--keep Alberta dependent on them.
