Stupid Question of the Day
NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo to Labour Minister Peter Fonseca: "The question is: Will you stand up for the Liberal Party or will you stand up for workers in Ontario?" asked Ms. DiNovo. "Will you penalize Ruby Dhalla? Will you put Ruby Dhalla in jail?"
Yes, why bother even having an investigation or a trial? Surely Peter Fonseca is qualified to pass judgement.

I guess it is safe to say that Rona Ambrose claim as sexiest female MP will remain safe for another year.

The Ruby votes will go to Guergis on the next ballot.

Well that's the whole point, Peter Fonseca is not qualified. Dhalla is not being called before a committee, it is she who is requesting a review of by the House of Commons ethics commissioner.
Hardly a witch hunt.

Agreed. The question as worded was pretty dumb. Things must be going poorly for the opposition to be _that_ het up by this potential scandal. They're rushing to judgement.

Anonymous should read his newspapers again - Dhalla has requested that the Ethics Commissioner look into this affair (That is not a Committee) - while Dhall is being asked to appear at the Immigration Committtee - and that is chaired by the CPC.

Two things - DiNovo isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, so no surprise she truly screwed this up. Also rather ironic for a former drug smuggler to be asking for anyone else to be locked up. Most of the allegations are minor (though the wage and passport seizures are horrific crimes if true - modern day slavery - the rest are not true crimes, though completely unacceptable in an elected official, never mind a former minister of immigration).

Hey there hey. Are you sure DiNovo isn't a drug smuggler with ties to Al Qaeda?
From my vantage point DiNovo is quite sharp. How many third party backbench MPP's have been able to influence the agenda of a government as much as DiNovo? Just make sure you keep spelling her name correctly, I want her re-elected here in Parkdale High Park.
Speaking of hey, as in political hay, Calgary Grit perhaps you should go back to Hansard or watch the proceedings if you want to proffer a more respectable version of the events. DiNovo was responding to Fonseca's earlier claim that "Again, getting back to our employment standards, let's be clear: Anybody-any employer-who breaks the law and discriminates against a pregnant woman or someone who is on parental leave will be severely penalized through fines and even imprisonment."
The question is not simply why did Fonseca sit on his hands for two weeks, but whether his tough talk extends to his friends as well. There is a further issue issue of Fonseca and other Ontario Liberals obstructing justice and covering up for Dhalla.
Perhaps the reception is a little fuzzy there in Calgary or maybe you're just another disingenuous Liberal. Yes her comment was provocative (we're talking the political bluster known as Oral Questions) but a little more contextualized and competent reading might serve you well.
I say this only because you're one of the very few Liberals I actually respect. Leave the willful misreadings to the Cherniaks and Bowies (losers who've already sealed their fate as inconsequential hacks).

Um it's not like the smuggling is at question, it was rather a big issue when she first stood. I just thought it was funny that she was trying to get someone else put in jail for ANYTHING.
I think DiNovo is a horrible, vile person and if I ever agree with anything she says I triple check my own position. That Parkdale likes her reinforces my detest of Parkdale and its residents. This is a neighbourhood up in arms against the opening of a Shopper's as evidence of gentrification!
Also, CG isn't really CG, since he's been living in Toronto for a while now. But asking for anything from a Dipper, even reading comprehension, is obviously far too much.

I'd like to think it was more like "importing". I do know it occurred over forty years ago (not quite as long a time as you'll spend in your parents' basement) but a long time nonetheless. I also know it failed miserably as fodder for a smear campaign against her and it has stuck in the craw of the Liberals ever since.
Hey, you're clearly a dweeb, and that's ok. You're a bit uptight and a bit of a condescending moralist. That's fine. You're entitled to your, albeit rather overstated opinion. "Horrible" and "vile" are pretty harsh opinions to hold of a complete stranger (are you sure you're not concealing a hard on for the good Reverend Doctor?)
I need to correct you though. It's Parkdale High Park that likes DiNovo. Seems like there are far less dweebs in Swansea & Bloor West than you assume.
CG, I'm terribly sorry I wasn't aware that you don't live in Calgary. I wouldn't chalk it up to my reading comprehension but more to my lack of interest in who you really are. However, I have often read your blog and reaffirm that I have a healthy respect for what you write (which is the reason I commented in the first place).
