  • At some point in September Dion mused a deficit was a possibility. The next day Rae had an Ontario flashback and smacked Dion for deficit talk.

Where this is harmful is that in the three months of lies Canadians could have been more selective and frugal with their purchases, knowing they might lose their jobs. This might amplify a downturn in the short-term, but maybe a person would take a few courses or bank the cash instead of building a second garage just before getting fired.
But I guess we like good public speakers and richer rich people.

  • The media are mistaken when they refer to Stephen Harper as an "economist" ... he did a quick master's degree and then entered the political world. He never practiced economics or did economic or econometric research. This shows in the terminology he uses when discussing the current crisis. He often uses the wrong words for things...as if he is speaking about something strange and unfamiliar. The economy.

Stephen Harper is a lifetime political junkie and PC-Reform-Alliance-Conservative hack. Like Guergis, Ambrose, Baird, Poilievre and the rest of them, they have no experience of the real working world of business, companies, banking, payrolls, etc. They are not even academics. They are hacks. They are clueless about economic matters and their exposure to the world outside of very narrow geographic areas is extremely limited. Our economic future is in the hands of the equivalent of a bunch of 14 year olds...led by a petulant, moody and vindictive 17 year old.

Only because the Liberals are too scared to govern. They'll give us shrill rhetoric about how horrible the Conservatives are while propping them up all the way.

What do you mean by "they aren't even academics"? It's like being an academic is suddenly as low as you can go. Almost as bad as a politician or, even worse, a Liberal.

  • I challenge anyone to identify a former Prime Minister who has been as much of a jerk to the opposition as Stephen Harper has. I am not talking uncooperative, but mean, with often no strategic purpose other than to be a jerk. He is one of a kind.

  • I suppose Stephen Harper was to blame for the TSX being shut down yesterday?

By Blogger paul.obeda@, at 4:48 PM

  • I also recall reading "TSX point drop biggest ever" in the news on Dec 1st. It probably had nothing to do with Dion and the newly-formed coalition, threatening to take down the government. No, of course not.

It was probably due to something that Harper did or said. Yeah, that's probably it. I'm sure some intrepid Liberal will find the link between Harper and the TSX biggest point drop ever, while completely ignoring the economic effects of the coalition talks.

  • Mike514:

    Are you serious?

The Dow dropped about as much the same day, and oil dropped that day too.

Stop drinking so much kool-aid, bud: it will clear your head and you can then re-join the reality-based world.

Our economies are integrated. Obviously, the coalition would have had a serious negative effect on the US economy as well.

  • Hey nice blog. Got sent over by the National Post.

For all of you leftoids who hate Harper: most of us small c conservatives don't like him much either. However, the alternatives the Libs have make us shudder. Politically correct nutbars like Dion, and similar.

Maybe if you Libs had some rational candidates the CPC would have to compete with better candidates.

Anyway, congrats on Ignatieff. I've heard him speak and he is obviously not a dolt like Dion nor a failed Marxist like Rae. Having Ignatieff to worry about should smarten Harper up a bit. Maybe.
