"In a campaign, you need to rip your opponents' hearts out"

Jim Karygiannis has quit as Joe Volpe's campaign manager over differences on Lebanon.

For those calling this a "fatal" blow, I wouldn't be so quick. Like it or not (and I don't know why you'd like it), Volpe is going to continue his inevitable march to fourth place and a role as kingmaker in Montreal.

Still, watching the Volpe campaign has been kind of entertaining, in a Plan 9 from Outer Space sort of way.

  • I don't think Volpe is done, either, Bart. He's there for the long haul.

  • My hunch is that Volpe alone, without Jimmy K, doesnt have the clout or the connections to transform half of those instant Liberals into delegates. He will likely carry on, and bring delegates to convention; but his "kingmaker" status has been downgraded a tier or two.

  • I agree with Kyle. Plus, Karygiannis will bring a lot of his team away as well.

I'm hearing Comuzzi is leaving too but that hasn't been confirmed.

Still, a good day for the Liberal Party.

  • Is Jimmy K still supporting Volpe, or has he just steped down as campaign manager?

I agree that if he does leave to support another candidate, it will make things difficult for Joe, but I still think the guy will do well. Top 6 at the bare miminum.

  • Good point Bart. I guess the key question is whether or not Karygiannis is leaving the Volpe camp completely or just leaving as its campaign manager. If it is latter, how well Volpe does will depend in part on how much involvement Karyigiannis retains.

  • I wonder if the split has anything to do with this: http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_PrintFriendly&c=Article&cid=1152913812220

It has to be extremely difficult to reconcile his support for Israel with his campaign's assertion that he will recognize the Hamas government without preconditions. My two cented guess is that Jimmy K was making a lot of promises to a lot of groups to win mass support and at some point Volpe had enough.

  • This is truly a sad day for both subterfuge and skulduggery.

Perhaps he'll pull out and support a candidate with a better chance of winning... like Hedy Fry.

Um, okay - I just fell in love here.

Like, hard. Like, falling off a cliff hard.

    I choo-choo-choose you!

  • This is a bit fishy, actually. Karygiannis will have known about Volpe's views on this from the get go. And now he quits?

  • Sounds like somebody is playing politics to me.

These guys will stop at nothing, to get attention and to speak out both sides of their mouth.

We'll see how far Jimmy K actually goes. I imagine he's on a very short leash.

  • The only problem with this mess for you Liberals is, well, either way you read it, it stinks. You need Volpe gone to try to get rid of the sleaze factor but the reason you might lose Volpe is sleazy.

Apparently Jimmy K has been recruiting hard in the Arab community and made promises that Volpe's support of Israel jeapordized. So now Jimmy K might move his ethnic bloc to another camp as long as that camp toes the anti-Israel line. Sweet. Another example of sleazy ethno-politics for the Liberal party to wear. You guys can't win for losing.

  • I think Toronto Liberal is exactly right.

Joe Volpe is a dynamic outsider that the Liberal establishment is trying silence because his bold vision is going to shake loss the nation and unleash a wallop of creative energy.

  • loose, not loss. sorry.

  • The 35,000 people that joined the Volpe team did not join because of Jimmy K, but because they were inspired by the vision that Joe Volpe is laying out for the Liberal Party and for Canada.

I bet 3/4 of them couldn't pick him out of a police line-up.
