The One Vote Harper Prays He Loses

Conservatives plan fall vote to attempt to change the definition of marriage!

  • I wish there were politicians brave enough to support this set-up the Harper is creating, to give him the rope he needs to re-open the debate. I say this not because the debate should or needs to be re-opened -- far from it -- but I think it would go a long way in showing him for what he really is. We know we can win the debate; but we don't know that the Harper will lose the next election. Any brave Liberal, NDP or Bloc MPs out there?

  • Votes on SSM have always been close, but I think this vote may be (pardon the pun) the last nail in the coffin of this issue.

Much as I may oppose SSM... I never thought we would win, and any temporary victories were just that; temporary.

What it will do is remind social-conservatives in the Liberal party that they are not welcome there (I'm sure social-liberals will provide enough cannon fodder for that), and thereby drive the Liberals further from the center-rights.

I remember during the last campaign the local Liberal candidate made SSM a front and center issue (condemning it very fiercely), driving many of my lifetime-Liberal-voting friends finally out of the party.

It also acts as a wedge issue between the Liberals and many immigrant communities, which are more socially conservative but also tend to vote Liberal.

Its a smart move on Harper's part politically, but don't think anti-SSM activists are silly enough to believe we can win.

  • The Prime Minister will lose the vote with the greatest of dignity. Perhaps MacKay can arrange for him to be in the potato patch immediately after the "defeat"!
