The One Vote Harper Prays He Loses

Conservatives plan fall vote to attempt to change the definition of marriage!

  • Harper knows damn well this vote will be lost, and he'll make sure the vote doesn't pass.

I'm sure most Liberals will vote against the motion, I'm guessing a bare minimum 85 of them if not all. The NDP will vote against it en masse, there's another 29 votes. The Bloc will largely vote against it, I'm guessing all 51.

Even if all Tories vote in favour (and not all will), there's still a margin of 10 votes in my scenario.

This is just Harper carrying out a campaign promise, and will finally bury the issue.

  • Darling, I never gave Harper nearly enough credit for cleverness and wiles! He'll lose this handily, fulfill a promise, and move on again. I really did underestimate him, I can be truthful about it.

  • I wish there were politicians brave enough to support this set-up the Harper is creating, to give him the rope he needs to re-open the debate. I say this not because the debate should or needs to be re-opened -- far from it -- but I think it would go a long way in showing him for what he really is. We know we can win the debate; but we don't know that the Harper will lose the next election. Any brave Liberal, NDP or Bloc MPs out there?

  • Well, he is reopening to appease his base first an foremost.
Second he wants to get the leadership candidates and there support in caucus to go on record with their vote, just like he did with the Afghan war.
Is it me or is it a coincidence that Bush has called for a complete ban again in the news at the same time that Harper is moving this

  • Votes on SSM have always been close, but I think this vote may be (pardon the pun) the last nail in the coffin of this issue.

Much as I may oppose SSM... I never thought we would win, and any temporary victories were just that; temporary.

What it will do is remind social-conservatives in the Liberal party that they are not welcome there (I'm sure social-liberals will provide enough cannon fodder for that), and thereby drive the Liberals further from the center-rights.

I remember during the last campaign the local Liberal candidate made SSM a front and center issue (condemning it very fiercely), driving many of my lifetime-Liberal-voting friends finally out of the party.

It also acts as a wedge issue between the Liberals and many immigrant communities, which are more socially conservative but also tend to vote Liberal.

Its a smart move on Harper's part politically, but don't think anti-SSM activists are silly enough to believe we can win.

  • The Prime Minister will lose the vote with the greatest of dignity. Perhaps MacKay can arrange for him to be in the potato patch immediately after the "defeat"!
