Around the World in 80 Hours

Adrienne Clarkson is once again being blasted in Alberta. This time, it's for missing Lieutenant Governor Lois Hole's funeral.

Is there anyone else out there who finds this whole story a little ironic? Last fall, Clarkson gets lambasted for her travel expenses and has her budget slashed. Now, she's being criticized for not taking a one day trip from Paris to Alberta and back to Europe.

  • This would have been the appropriate time to spend the money and make the whirlwind trip. Don't you think that the Queen's representative for Canada should attend the funeral of the Queen's representative for Alberta - it seems to fit the job description. A Lieutenant Governor's funeral is not exactly a daily occourance, so people wouldn't have blasted her for it.

It's the difference between doing your job and wasting money.

  • Yes, maybe she should have gone. But, she should also be attending international functions, and promoting Canada overseas.

It just seems to me that the GG gets criticized for not doing anything important and not having a role. But the fact is her role is symbolic. Just as her being in attendance at the funeral was important for Albertans, the many other functions she does over the course of the year are important. I'm more complaining about the budget cuts than the funeral flack. This incident ilustrates WHY she needs large travel budget.

  • The representative of the Queen in Canada should not lie (or whatever you call directing her staff to disseminate 3 thinly plausible reasons for her absence in as many days).

  • Wasn't Mrs. Clarkson on holidays? If she was, then why should we expect her to be "on the job"? This is purely political spin, just to get Albertans upset at Ottawa. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • She left for holidays after Hole's death and then "lied" about what she was doing.

She occupies the foremost ceremonial position in the country, one whose duties arguably require personal attendance at such events. She shirked that duty.
