Hey Big Spender

David McKie at CBC identifies the most frugal MPs and the big spenders.

Oh, and since I haven't said anything yet on the controversy over MP expenses, I'll keep it short:

Yup, they should be made public.

  • Too bad the otherwise awesome David Mckie didn't make his raw data available.

Open and accountable and all that.

  • Hey did you see that Rob Oliphant put up his Financial Disclosure on his website and a YouTube Video explaining why:

What do you think CG? Should they really be made this public?

  • Top spenders for travel, $200-225k
    in order
    1. NDP Nathan Cullen
    2. CPC Russ Hebert
    3. NDP Jack Layton
    4. LPC Todd Russell
    5. NDP Denis Bevington
    6. LPC Dominic LeBlanc

Funny that the media chose the only CPC MP with travel expenses $200k + to single out for a public flogging.
Seems to me the prize goes to the boys in orange.....

  • What is most striking about the travel expenses, year after year, is how unsurprisingly, regardless of party affiliation, it's always the MP's from the far-flung and isolated ridings who have the big travel bills.

Expensive to travel the Arctic, coastal BC or Labrador, and between those places and Ottawa? Yawn. Wake me when you find something juicy.

  • Anon - I think what Oliphant and a bunch of other MPs have done is great.

Like BCer in Toronto said, the problem with disclosing is the media might not report it properly.

But, in the end, more transparency is a good thing.

  • I will add, that having the AG audit the expenses would probably be enough, without having to make every last one public.
