Rule Britannia
Stephen Harper speaks out in favour of "modernizing" the rules for succession when it comes to selecting Britain's, and Canada's, head of state.
...just so long as this modernization doesn't including allowing Canada's head of state to be Catholic, Canadian, or born outside a certain gene pool.

I've always "marvelled" at how a sovereign country can be satisfied with having a foreign head of state.

Seems to have worked for us so far. I like the history of it.

And we have our own constitution plus the Bill of Rights and Freedom - thanks PET

I believe the rational response is 'meh, so long as we don't have to open the constitution. Oh, wait...'

Would consider arguments for a (bilingual) Canadian monarchy but that's as a last resort; republic is my preference, all the way.
I too enjoy history, including the British and French and other monarchies. Monarchy is not the future, and belongs to history -- especially in the New World.

Why not do away with the Monarchy all together.
Divine appointment of the head of state is a ridiculous concept for 2011 (It was a ridiculous concept for 2000, and 1900 too). Its also quite expensive every year.
Time for a uniquely concept that represents and unifies all Canadians, not just those of British ancestry. We can respect the history of many of the Anglo founders of this country, it would be nice to have a head of state that unifies French, First Nations, and new Canadians.
If you want to modernize, lets do it right not preserve a symbol that has been dividing Canadians for with new language.

The monarchy is useful precisely because it is not democratically legitimate, or even Canadian. Why? Because that fact ensures that our head of state cannot meddle in our politics.
It's a figurehead that ties us not only to our historical past, but also to the British Commonwealth. Plus, eliminating the monarchy would require a constitutional amendment, which is damn near impossible to get in this country anyway.
The calls for the monarchy being more representative of the country remind me of Greendale's attempt to find a non-racial, non-gendered mascot for the Greendale "Human Beings", in the show Community. This is what the final product looked like:

This is why I'm open to a Canadian monarchy, despite preferring a republic. (Don't get me wrong: I LOVE Elizabeth, she is made of steel and has all my possible respect.)
Still, I think it's cruel to expect people to be born into monarchial positions -- being Royal really does suck (aside from all the nice perks and shagging, of course).
a figurehead that ties us not only to our historical past, but also to the British Commonwealth
But, not to the Francophonie, and not to the First Nations -- so it doesn't really tie us to our historic past. I realize the Brits won the Plains of Abraham, but the Brits aren't here anymore, and the future is more important than the past.
It may feel like a historic tie, but to many people, it's an historic burden that divides people.
I never have heard of Greendale, but I agree with the point you're making -- there is no French/English/Native/New Immigrant representative possible.
Except, of course, me. I'm struggling to learn some Cree, and I do, seriously, have incredible genes. No cavities, washboard abs, high (wasted) IQ. I am available to stop reading CalgaryGrit and start real responsibility as ruler when the public is.

Done in one. The system works and it reflects our history.

Jacques, your old Little Prince avatar makes a lot more sense now! Minus the abs, I think I have an uncle that has you beat though. He grew up in a Frenglish family in Montreal (my grandfather was a unilingual Socred anglo Albertan, my grandmaman was a francophone Albertan), and later learned Cree for fun. I think he can also make harps.

Cree or no cree, I think Jacques Beau Vert would make a far more appropriate head of state than a Brit who visits Canadians once a twice a decade.
By calgarygrit, at 12:42 p.m.
I'm ready to challenge this uncle in physical combat for the Crown... and not only because he sounds like the kind of guy I'd be willing to lose against for such an important outcome...

Thanks CG; you get me!
a Brit who visits Canadians once a twice a decade.
Exactly. Also, let's not forget that the Monarch still retains the power to behead for treason.
Who do people honestly think can lift an axe higher and swing it harder? Queen Elizabeth or me???
By Jacques Beau Vert, at 10:19 a.m.
I'm ready to problem this granddad in actual physical fight to the Crown... instead of only while he seems like the sort of gentleman I'd be prepared to get rid of from for this kind of significant result...
