  • I don't mind the 5 cent fees. If you're going to curb use of something that is very easy to change, economic incentive is the way to go. Not that I think it matters. It's a nice placebo.

  • The conservative "social engineering" rhetoric is tired -- most governments want people to change their thinking, attitudes, and actions in some way or other, for whatever purpose or reason.

  • OMG! That's teh SOCIALISM! We are now living in Stalin's Russia! First, 5cents extra on bags, then... The Gulags!

  • Anyone who thinks the Conservative party is conservative, or speaks for conservatism, I have a bridge for sale.

This is the party, after all, that wants to ban regular light bulbs and force us to use the mercury-filled, expensive, energy-efficient ones. BAN our light bulbs. Now THAT is social engineering.

As for plastic bags, save some of the outrage for Calgary city council, who wants to BAN plastic bags. Because, of course, now that the city has raised property taxes almost 20% (if you include recycling fees), taxed our cats, banned smoking and closed down Memorial drive for cyclists, there really aren't any more important issues than plastic bags. Ask one of the homeless people sleeping in the +15s, and they'll agree, those bags have to go!
