Smart Politics

Listening to Kory Teneycke on Politics, it sounds like Thursday's economic update will feature MP pay cuts.

  • Brilliant move, if its true.

  • Lets hope Harper cuts the size of Cabinet while he is at it. He makes all the decisions and controls all the messages anyway.

  • What is an MPs salary at now? (inc tax free portions, travel expenses, etc?).

Sounds similar to when Ralph Klein cut MLA pensions (kind of...) right before the 1993 election. Mind you, his party was 10% down in the polls at that point, so it's not exactly the same situation. Good political move, though.

  • MP pay cuts will probably lead to the government being toppled.

  • M.P.'s make something in the order of $155k not including expense accounts.

  • If I were Harper I'd propose pay cuts only for opposition MPs, just to see if they'd sit there and take it.

  • Aren't MP's salaries tied to that of Supreme Court Judges? In order to increase or decrease they have to change the judges, which is more difficult to do.

  • I doubt they wil have deep enough pay cuts to cover the extra costs of Harper's significantly increased cabinet. It would be more typical of Harper to have increased cabinet one week and then do some cuts which don't even compensate - all optics with him, no substance. We'll see.

  • Probably 10% less ink used on the 10%ers, James Moore has to share Baird's closet, and talking ferns Oda, Ambrose and O'Connor get no fertilizer until they produce carnations.

  • This is just dumb, dumber and dumbest
1)The magnitude of the savings will produce little or no benefit vis a vis the current problem(s)
    2) MP salary cuts produce no lasting political advantage
    3) Down the road, when Steve wants to raise salaries to make up for the cuts, there will be outrage

  • The party of Bev Oda, Maxime Bernier and Michael Fortier discover personal restraint?

    Bulls hit.

  • It's a symbolic gesture, but I think it goes over well. How many people would be willing to take a pay cut on principle?
