The Invisible Hand

Adrienne Clarkson is now hinting that she may have played a role in the non-confidence vote insanity we saw earlier this spring:

"You may be surprised and interested to know that I am really glad to have participated in (a minority government)," Clarkson said in a speech Wednesday, her largest final engagement and a farewell of sorts.

"My constitutional role has lain in what are called 'reserve powers:' making sure that there is a prime minister and a government in place, and exercising the right 'to encourage, to advise, and to warn,' " she said.

"Without really revealing any secrets, I can tell you that I have done all three."

Feel free to suggest your own theory, but it sounds to me like she talked to Martin after the Liberals lost the "non non-confidence" vote and told him he had to hold a definitive vote of confidence within a week.

  • What, is she trying to one-up Brian Mulroney?

  • THIS JUST IN: Govenor General Adrienne Clarkson takes credit for ending the Cold War!

In a stunning revalation, Adrienne Clarkson has admitted that it was HER, not Brian Mulroney, who met with Soviet President Gorbachev and US President Ronald Reagan before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

  • Her role in "making sure there was Prime Minister" was probably to contact her friends in the CBC/media and encourage them to run those push polls they ran about "waiting for an election".

  • Sigh....

Can't we grow the f@#k up and get rid of this Monarchy b.s. once and for all, and religate queens and princes to Walt Disney movies?

  • And here I thought this post would be all about me. :)

  • If Clarkson did push Martin to hold the vote then good for her.

I don't know what the people who want the GG abolished expect in it's place to hold the PMO in check. Scott Reid and David Herle's word?

  • You know, I thought is was going to be about you too Invisible Hand...

  • but she was wrong...the House is compelled to hold a vote as soon as practicable if confidence in it is threatened. not "as soon as they can find someone to take up the offer of a cabinet post."

  • I think the assumption that Ms Clarkson "pushed" PMPM to do anything gives her entirely too much credit for gumption and constitutional understanding. I think it equally likely that her conversation with Paulie was more along the lines of - "Don't worry, I'll give you as much time as you need to get this little mess all straightened out. I appreciate that an electino now might let the barbarian Tories in power." That would be both the path of least resistance, and the path most alligned with her (and her hubby's) soft-left politics.

In any event, if she is unwilling to provide details (which she unabiguously should not do) then she should not have brought the subject up at all. Since we will never know, we are all free to project our own values and assumptions - truely a pointless exercise, aside from idle amusement.

  • I think she's slightly overrating herself. I mean, she's leaving soon and doesn't quite have a legacy yet, so she's probably in a rush to build one. Or anything that might remotely look like one...

  • I'm with Dean. If I had to bet, I'd say her advice was more along the lines of telling Martin he was safe ignoring the (how many again?) quasi-confidence votes he lost.

  • Call me naive, but I'm with CalgaryGrit: I think that if Clarkson intervened at all, it would have been to tell Martin to hold a confidence vote within a reasonable time period.

Unfortunately, said time period allowed him to buy off a Conservative MP, but I think that that would have surprised Her Excellency as much as it did the rest of us.

  • I can almost hear the conversation.

GG: There is a question of confidence in your government PM.

PM: My advisors tell me this is merely administrative.

GG: I think I read somwhere that I am supposed to warn you, so I'm warning you do something before we have to let the commoners vote.

PM: No worries there. I'm good at getting rid of deficits. We have a democratic one, and I'm going to get rid of it.

    GG: The deficit?

    PM: The democracy.

GG: Get on with it man.
