Lost in Translation

After yesterday’s release of Liberal tape translations, it appears more tapes have been found and translated. I think you’ll agree this casts a whole new light on the scandal:

TM: Well, I have talked to Volpe, already. So —
GG: Is he manageable?
TM: Yes.

Translation: TM - “Volpe will lay off…if you support him for leadership.”

GG: Belinda Stronach and others position, they had a straight forward
deal.
UD: You see, every circumstance is different. Your circumstances are
different, mine were different, Scott’s were different.

Translation: UD - “Face it buddy, you’re no Belinda.”

GG - We have to rush through because of the Question Period
UD - Today, Question Period is at 2 PM
GG - Don’t you have to prepare for it.
UD - No, I can just prepare in 5 minutes, in the car.

Translation: UD - “Why would I spend time preparing for QP? Have I done anything worthy of being asked a question in the last 8 months?”

TM: We all have to be agree… whether we can have… an honest to be an answer knowing that I said some one with a caliber and courage in the context of you and your wife…

Translation: “Sorry, I just watched Star Wars last night, and I can’t stop talking like Yoda.”

TM: Let me make it absolutely clear that we are a welcoming party; we will do everything we can. Obviously for us continuing to expand our base in BC and in prominent communities in this country is a political priority for us. It is a welcoming mat that has a lot of nice comfy fur on it. [Laughs]

Translation: “The Liberal Party is a welcoming mat with a lot of nice comfy fur…unless you’re Sheila Copps…or Tony Kuo…or Steven Hogue…or Warren Kinsella…”

  • Mike's started a Grewal pool: http://rationalreasons.blogspot.com/2005/06/update-on-grewal-affair-grewal-pool.html

I'm thinking June 22 is Grewal's last day in the CPC caucus.

  • Dosanjh has cleared up the issue. He has found 2 "experts" that say the tapes have been doctored.

Except these "experts" that Dosanjh says validate that the tapes have been doctored, are 2 hacks from a radio station in Ottawa.

Well my Grandam says the tapes WERE NOT doctored. Now I only need to find one more expert to match Dosanjh...

(best line in QP today..Monte Solberg telling conspiracy theorist Dosanjh to buy a tin-foil hat. nice...)

  • You need to check this site out. When I first heard this I was shocked at how coniving Grewal is.

  • A story picked up by the National Post

"OTTAWA -- One of Canada's top forensic-sound analysts says a conversation secretly taped by Tory MP Gurmant Grewal appear to have been altered.

Stevan Pausak told The Canadian Press a 46-second segment of the recording now at the centre of a political storm has an abnormal break that indicates a portion may have been cut out.

The gap occurs in a recorded phone chat between Grewal and Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh about the possibility of Grewal joining the Liberals in exchange for an unspecified reward.

"It appears to be altered," Pausak said.

"This brief segment at the beginning shows that it's not continuous, and it should be."

Pausak, a physicist, MIT-trained forensic scientist and former Ontario government expert, provides analysis for court trials through his Oakville-based company, Forensic Science Services Inc.

He listened to a segment of the tape Thursday at the request of The Canadian Press."

  • If you are going to the trouble of faking something, would you not want to make the evidence damning. I would expect a fake tape to have Ujjal Dosanjh saying "and I'll give you a cabinet post, and a senate seat, and money, and a big car and a pony and a......"

If Grewal was using a newer digital recorder with powersaving and memorysaving features where the recording stops and starts after a few seconds of silence, it will sound like the recording is spliced.

See the Walkabout 5210 Digital Voice Recorder specs:

  • No competent forensic analyst would offer an opinion without access to the original source material. Have people learned nothing from the CBS affair?

The hacks at CFRA were, indeed, looking at edited material: they edited it themselves. They were looking at WAV files, and what was released were MP3s.

Nobody has made any statements about how the MP3s were assembled; there is no evidence supporting any conclusions.

And there's no reason to suspect that the phrases being cited are affected by any processing artifacts.

  • This is history repeating itself. It was not that long ago CBS claimed they had unearthed dirt on Bush based on the opinion of experts, and we know where that ended up.

In this case, the experts in question don't have the original tapes, don't have the recording equipment used, and probably don't even know what recording equipment was used. And further, they almost certainly don't know what process was used to transfer the original recordings to Grewal's web site.

But those rather important details will not stop the left-wing dinosaurs, CP and CBC, from making bold claims. And their hunger to save the Liberals will blind them from any common sense and decency.

I suspect CP and CBC will look like fools before this is over, just as CBS and Dan Rather did.
